Blinds are evidenced to have been in use by early nomadic desert dwellers. These innovators would use strips of cloth hung over their windows to keep out the extreme desert temperature. In modern times, vertical blinds have not lost their usefulness, especially in warmer climates.

As well as serving to keep out the heat during warmer months, these hanging window blinds also act as insulation during cooler months. Placed in front of a sliding door or a window, they act as a deterrent to all manner of bugs and flies. With a simple adjustment they can allow more or less light into a room. When fully closed they provide total privacy ‘ an important consideration in terms of home security.

When compared with other styles of window dressing, vertical blinds have many points in its favor. They’re amongst the cheapest kinds of curtain or blind. Because of the nature of their design, they’re incredibly versatile. The window blinds are made to fit most standard window sizes, and can easily be customized to fit different windows. They’re simple to operate, taking little effort to adjust. Maintenance is easier than with other types of window blinds, as they’re less prone to collecting dust and dirt. Unlike other blinds, they do not tend to suffer wind damage, even in strong winds. The slats, or louvers, are easily replaced individually without have to replace the whole set.

Although in the past people have considered them to be on the ugly side, modern designs and innovations have helped to make vertical blinds trendy again. While some still go for the vinyl look in basic colors, there is no need to be restricted to just one material or color. These days you can find window blinds in all different styles, materials, fabrics, textures, colors and transparencies.

Some innovative modern materials used include wood and faux wood, plastic, metal, polyester, bamboo, suede and aluminum. Fabrics may have fire retarding properties, come in metallic colors, or be made with reflective coatings to keep the sun out. Most of these blinds have a very high level of UV protection.

As well as choosing different materials for the actual louvers, modern day customers can seek out motorized blinds that operate at the touch of a button. There are some window blinds available that automatically adjust the angles of the louvers according to the time of day to control lighting and heat.

Instead of replacing aesthetically displeasing blinds, some people choose other methods to enhance the appearance of their blinds and the window. One idea is to create a curtain out of a light material, such as organza, to hang in front of unsightly window blinds. This softens the look of the blinds and instills a peaceful, ethereal quality. Another idea is to use wallpaper, cutting strips to match the size of the louvers and gluing them on. Some have had success dying their fabric blinds, but caution is advised if this method is used as the fabric may shrink in the water.

To clean vertical blinds, always leave them hanging where they are. Using the brush attachment, vacuum the blinds regularly in a downward motion, from top to bottom. Follow up by using a duster made of lamb’s wool, wiping in the same downward motion. For tougher build-up of dirt and grime, wipe firmly with a rubber dry sponge.
