Bamboo shades may be used as window shades inside or out and can also be used to create a shaded porch, patio or veranda. These shades block a large amount of heat from the sun while still allowing a breeze to blow through. In addition, since they are made of bamboo, the shades are a green alternative.
Bamboo is a quick growing grass that may increase in height by as much as a foot each day. Many shades use young immature bamboo that has grown quickly. Once the canes are harvested, more are produced regularly. Bamboo, while growing, lowers greenhouse gases and is much more environmentally friendly than is anything made of plastic. It is a renewable resource and its growth provides jobs for persons needing work.
Thin bamboo canes may be used whole to make the shades. In addition, larger canes may be cut to make shades that have wider flat slats. Most shades use very a very simple mechanism with a cord that when pulled rolls the shades from the bottom. The shade mechanism may have a cord catch to hold the window shades in a rolled up position or the cord may be tied off to hold the shades in position. Bamboo can even be used to make Venetian window shades by choosing larger canes and cutting them to width. The once cut, the canes are pressed flat and processed much like bamboo flooring.
The un-split bamboo used in inexpensive shades is ideal for outdoor use. It is somewhat water resistant and will dry quickly from a late spring or summer shower. The air space between the canes allows gentle summer breezes to cool your shaded spot easily. When you are expecting gusting winds, it is best to roll the shades so that the wind does not catch them and cause damage. Most other times they can be stored up or down.
When getting ready for winter, store your shades in a dry storage area. While moisture is generally not a problem with bamboo, the dampness of winter can keep the bamboo wet long enough that mold begins to grow. In addition to being unsightly and causing you to have to replace the shades prematurely, the mold can be unhealthy. Storing shades inside for the winter can increase the life of the shade.
Inside the home, bamboo offers a natural looking window treatment. Many college students have used bamboo shades as an attractive yet inexpensive room divider. Bamboo is available in its natural light tan color, but may be bleached to an almost white color or stained to very dark colors before being made into a shade.
These shades filter the light. They do not completely block out all the light, so if the sun is a problem, you may want to make another choice. They are a good choice if just the glare of the light is a problem. Installation out of the home allows the heat to be kept outside and not trapped between the window and its covering.
Bamboo shades can help to lower cooling costs for the home during warm summer months. Bamboo is a renewable resource.
