If you have decided to buy some vertical blinds make sure from the beginning what will be needed before you go out and purchase these blinds for your home.

Before purchasing your vertical blinds it is always a smart thing to know what the exact measurement is of your window or door. Then you should be able to find out if they are standard or need to be special ordered

Once your vertical blinds are in and you have brought them home for installation make sure you have specific tools and hardware items in order to be able to successfully install your window blinds.

The tools that you will need are a tape measure wood or metal, pencil, flathead screwdriver, hammer and finishing nails, drill with a quarter inch hex head bit, a level, scissors, wall anchors and one sixteenth and three sixteenth drill bits.

Parts you will need to make sure that you have for your window blinds would be wall brackets, nuts, mounting clips, bolts, mounting screws, headrail, louvers or vanes, chain and clip and cord weight or cord clip.

The two different mounting styles differ somewhat in the way that they are installed. There is an inside mount that goes on the inside of the windowsill and the outside mount that goes over the window on the wall.

No mounting brackets will be used for an inside mount, this is where you would use mounting clips. Just remove the mounting brackets from the blinds and discard them. Now adjust the screws keeping the mounting clips intact.

The next thing you will do is mark the valance and the frame of the window. You need to hold the valance up and measure out the width of the valance marking it on the wall. Measure an inch out from where the width mark is to get the depth. Center it by placing the mounting clip in the third groove which is four inches from the end.

Put valance up and line the back of it with the marks for the depth. After this drill holes where the mounting marks have been made. Remember to use wall anchors if you are hanging the blinds on dry wall. Now, screw the screws into the clips, valance and the windowsill.

Once this is all done you can then put the headrail into place. Make sure that you have put the cord on the side that you want it to be on before going any further.

Outside mounting vertical blinds are done just a little differently than the inside mounting type. Start by measuring the length of your louvers and marking the height on your wall by adding two inches to the overall length of the lovers. Now you can center the headrail of the blinds by placing the headrail where you have your wall markings, you will now need to make a two inch mark that is made about four inches in from each end. Make sure marks for the brackets are evenly spaced.

Holding the brackets up to those two-inch marks you will then need to mark the area that will be for the mounting holes. The next thing to do is to drill holes needed for mounting. Again make sure if you have dry wall to use wall anchors for more sturdiness. Screw the mounting brackets in and make sure to use two screws in each of the brackets used.

Tighten all the screws and snap the headrail into place and do the same with the window blinds that is mentioned with the inside mount.

Take your louvers and attach them gently to the stem slot making sure you do it slowly and gently and then put back down into place. It is important to note that if you have cloth window blinds make sure the hems are facing in the same way.

Be sure to attach the cord with a weight that is secured and fastened to the wall. This is a security measure to keep children and pets from getting strangled in the cords. If this is an inside mount then the cord should be attached to the sill at the back.

If you find the cord is longer than you would like it to be just tie a knot to where you want it to be and then use scissors to cut the rest off.

Here’s How To Worry Less On Your Vertical Blinds

Filed Under (Blackout Window Blinds, Blinds Shades, Cheap Mini Blinds, Curtains Blinds, Window Blinds) by Jesita Jerik on 17-03-2010

Vertical blinds have been popular for quite some time. They are used in practically everywhere such as in homes and offices. Not only are they practical in adjusting sunlight to the room and providing privacy, they also dress your windows and doorways in a way that suites you. Whatever it is you’ve intended for your vertical blinds, it’s important that they are well taken care of. Here are a few things to keep in mind to keep your blinds in good condition and functioning at their utmost.

Proper installation:

Taking care of your blinds happens on the day they come to your home or office. Proper installation means providing ample time in setting them up appropriately. This will save window blinds from breakage caused by repeated falls. It may include hiring a professional unless you’re quite handy with tools. In some instances, professionals can cost you but in some stores, they come free with your purchase.

Placement:

Vertical blinds may be made of fabric, plastic or aluminum. As you envision how the room will look like, always consider which blinds go to where. For example, fabric blinds may not go well with the windows in your bathroom or near the sink. Water splashes can damage the fabric easily and allow it to gain mildew. Thus, choosing less delicate blinds for these areas will be a good idea.

Other Factors:

As a fact, external factors pose threats to your blinds. There are blinds designed to be placed outside the window so unless this is the case, it’ll be best not to improvise by using an indoor blinds, outside. Kids and pets can also pose a hazard as they tend to pull on the hanging strings that control the slats. Per common sense, the less beating they get, the longer they will last.

Cleanliness:

Cleaning your blinds is most important. This can be a little hard but there are many way to make cleaning easier. In vertical blinds, dust accumulation may not be too obvious but they still need to be cleaned regularly. As a matter fact, the best approach is regular cleaning to avoid dust and dirt from building up thus making the task easier. The windows behind window blinds and the floor accumulate a lot of dirt that they tend to pass on to your blinds. So as a preventive measure, keep these areas clean.

Use a duster that will lift the dust from the slats instead of just pushing them to one corner. This is useful for fabric vertical blinds and during those days when you’re going for light cleaning. Remove the dust from top to bottom if you are using an ordinary duster so that you can sweep out the dust from the floor later. For tougher dust accumulation, you can use a commercially made solution, such as sprays, that will help you get to those hard to reach places. A home-made solution can just be white vinegar. Pour enough amounts on the cloth or a cotton glove then start wiping the dust away.

For general cleaning, detach the slats from the head rail and submerge them in water. It would be best to use the bathtub as it can accommodate the length of window blinds. Scrub them thoroughly with soap but not too much to cause damage. Air dry or use a clean cloth to dry them.

When you take care of your blinds, you’ll see that they’ll give more that what you paid for. Just like other practical things, the less problem they encounter, the better they perform. Taking care of your blinds prevents you from further expenses and more value to your money.
