The landscaper must decide whether deciduous plants (those that drop their leaves) or evergreens should be used in the foundation planting. Your taste and your climate will be the key factors. But remember that a mixture of the two is rarely, if ever, desirable – although an evergreen ground cover can well be used with whichever type of plant you decide on. Indeed, such a ground cover might be even more useful and effective around deciduous material than around evergreens. It will keep the planting from looking sparse and bare after the shrubs go dormant and drop their leaves.

Seasonal Changes

Deciduous plants grow much faster and larger than most evergreens so you need to know more about plant habits generally to use them properly. As to which type offers the greater interest throughout the year, it may surprise you to learn that the deciduous plants lead. In many parts of the country such plants go through four seasonal phases in each of which they take on different characteristics.

As an example, imagine a high-bush blueberry growing near a window from which you can see its branches. In the spring it is decked with attractive creamy-white lily-of-the-valley-like flowers, a beautiful sight to behold. By mid-summer it has picked up its full foliage and also a crop of cool-looking blueberries which attract birds and add life to the garden. In the fall, few plants can surpass the brilliant foliage coloration of this species. And, finally, in the winter, the zig-zag growth of its bare twigs is attractive, especially when sheathed in ice during a sleet storm.

Evergreen Phases

Most evergreens, on the other hand, have but two phases which are not too strikingly different. In the late spring and early summer the new bright green growth contrasts pleasantly with the dark green older growth. After a few months the two blend into one more or less uniform greenand that is the extent of the seasonal change.

Of course, they present a beautiful picture when covered with snow, but if the snow is heavy it may split off branches or bend them over and permanently spoil their looks. Give that aspect of the situation some consideration in your planning if you live in a region subject to ice or snowstorms. Look around and see how evergreens on properties in your locality have fared.

Tips For The Dahlia Lover

Although winter weather does not permit gardening outdoors in December, the Northern gardener does have a few opportunities to actively practice his hobby. For example, it is during this month (December) that he can clean and store the tender summer flowering bulbs and tubers until they can be used again for the garden next year.

The dahlias that were dug after hard frosts ended their season’s growth need a little attention now. Tubers that have a great deal of soil clinging to them because they were dug when the ground was very moist or because they were growing in a very heavy soil which tends to stick to the roots, should be cleaned by gently rubbing away the dried earth or washing it off.

Some dahlia growers object greatly to the washing method, but others practice it regularly. If they are cleaned with water they should he allowed to dry off before packing them for the winter.

For years, vermiculite has become a favored packing material for dahlia tubers and the bulbs, roots and tubers of other plant materials that have to be dug and stored for the winter. Dahlia tubers must be handled with great care so that the individual tubers do not break off at the main stalk without possessing a part of the latter and the growth “eyes” that will produce a new plant next year.

Contrary to recommendations often made, the tubers do not have to be stored upside down. There really is no advantage to this but there is a possibility of injury in handling. Storage temperature is very important; it should be a reasonably steady 40 to 50 degrees. Deep wooden boxes or bins make good storage containers and sand, sawdust, sandy soil, horticultural peat (processed peat), pulverized peat from a local source (and of course the previously mentioned vermiculite) are good material in which to bury the tubers for the winter.

Patio Furniture Umbrellas Provide Shade With Fashion And Luxury

Patio Furniture Umbrellas are very popular as they give a certain spa-like look to your patio or deck. They come in all kinds of shapes, sizes and are made of many different materials. You can find them in almost any color and with beautiful designs on the fabric. There are single umbrellas and double ones and all are relatively simple to operate and will bring a sense of beauty to your patio.

When you go to purchase a patio furniture umbrella always make sure to read all the directions and know what you are getting. Certain umbrellas have an easy crank mechanism that will bring the canopy up or down. There are others that have to have a peg inserted in order to keep the umbrella up and they are a little harder to make work. You can find umbrellas that have a button near the top of the pole that allows you to tilt them in any direction. This will keep the sun out of your eyes whenever it is low in the horizon. Today you can get an umbrella that can be opened or closed with a remote control.

More expensive umbrellas usually produced in wood. The post and ribs of the umbrella are made of wood. These umbrellas are very durable and they weigh the most. Most umbrellas have to be lifted in order to place them in the stand and if you cannot lift weight you probably should try to find a lighter umbrella.

You are in luck because aluminum umbrellas are lightweight. Aluminum umbrellas usually are made with the tilting mechanism to keep the sun at bay even in the evening. The nice thing about aluminum is that it does not rust and so your umbrella will last for several years.

Most patio umbrellas have a pole that goes up in the middle and ribs come from the pole with the canopy over top. There is a type of umbrella called the offset umbrella and works well if you do not have a table with a hole in the center. The pole for this umbrella goes up the side and attaches to a freestanding stand. You just place it near the table and it will cover it with sunscreen protection. These umbrellas are very portable and you can use them to cover someone sitting in a chair or chaise lounge.

It is important to stick to a few rules when it comes to your patio furniture umbrella so that it will last for years to come. Never leave the umbrella open when you are not at home. You never know when either a rain or wind storm will pop up and wind really damages an outdoor umbrella. You may come home and wonder where it went because the wind blew it several miles away. Those people in snowy climates need to put their umbrellas away for the winter. Just put it out of the way in an upright position and cover it to keep dust and dirt off. Never lay it on the side and put anything on top of it because it will surely be ruined.

When spring comes take the umbrella out of storage and give it a wipe down with a damp cloth. If it needs a little more intense cleaning use some water and soap. Never use abrasive cleansers because it can scratch the canopy and posts. There are those canopies that are removable and washed in a washing machine. If you do not have a large capacity washer do not do this at home but go to the Laundromat. Another way to wash an umbrella is to put it up and rinse it off with a good hosing. Just be sure the water pressure is not so high it breaks the umbrella. Never dry the canopy in a drier.

You can find patio furniture umbrellas at most garden centers. You can also find them during the spring and summer at most local department and discount stores. You can get them online as well for great prices but you need to watch how much shipping and handling you will be charged. Sometimes you can get them at furniture stores and if you have a shop that specializes in outdoor furniture you can surely find them there. It probably is not the best idea to get the cheapest one you can find. The inexpensive umbrellas usually do not last long, sometimes not even a whole season.

It is simple to find the fabulous Patio Furniture Set that will give your backyard the style you want today! When you want to include Patio Furniture Umbrellas, you will find an amazing array to choose from now!

Wrought Iron Patio Furniture- Elegant Heavy Metal For Life

Wrought iron patio furniture is a great accessory to have on your deck to relax and entertain. A leisurely supper with friends outdoors on a perfect summer evening is hard to top. It is no wonder then that patio furniture is an old favourite of those shopping around for patio accessories. If you happen to be one of those shoppers perhaps you should take a look at wrought iron patio furniture before considering traditional wood or plastic sets.

When compared to plastic and wooden outdoor furniture wrought iron patio furnitures popularity is easy to appreciate. Solid, sturdy and long lasting not to mention stylish and attractive, wrought iron terrace furniture is an excellent choice when considering moving your lifestyle outdoors. Iron furniture is also low maintenance and with a little basic care can reasonably last a lifetime.

Wrought iron is actually an ancient art form where square or round iron bars are heated up until red hot and then drawn, twisted and bent into decorative shapes. These shapes are then used to construct anything from gates and palisades to, you guessed it, wrought iron patio furniture. This construction method lends this type of furniture its inherent strength and durability.

The only real weak point in any wrought iron patio furniture piece are the points where the individual parts are welded together. If these welds are well executed, the furniture will quite realistically last for many years. One point to take note off when looking at these sets are these welds. If they appear flimsy or rough choose another set. Badly welded joints can compromise the strength of the piece and cause cuts or tears in clothing.

The very nature of the construction lends a personal, unique touch to all items unlike mass produced, injection moulded plastic varieties. They are available in a large range of finishes and cushion upholstery so they can blend in well with most decor themes.

Their durability and strength notwithstanding, wrought iron patio furniture sets do need a little basic care to get the maximum life span from them. A regular check for scratches and chips in the finish will go a long way to ensuring you get the full benefit of the furniture and its natural longevity.

As with most painted or powder coated metal items, rust is wrought iron patio furniture’s biggest enemy. Any chips or scratches should be lightly sanded with medium grade sand paper or a wire brush to remove all loose paint, then a couple of coats of suitable enamel touch up paint applied to cover the chip.

Cleaning these sets is also a piece of cake. Simply remove the cushions, hose down and scrub with a soft brush and mild soap water solution, rinse and allow the sun to dry the pieces off. This keeps dust build up to a minimum and also makes checking for scratches far easier.

Wrought iron patio furniture can add great aesthetic appeal to any entertainment or leisure environment and is strong and long lasting enough to weather the storms of many years of hard use. Their character and durability has made these sets a long standing feature on patios around the world and you would not go far wrong with a wrought iron set on yours.

It is easy to create a distinctive and wonderful look fast when you add fabulous wrought iron patio furniture in your yard decor. Using the right patio furniture will give you the signature look that you want easily!
