Window blinds are coverings for windows, normally attached to the interior side. Windows need some form of cover inside and out, and window blinds are exactly that, but they cost more than the ordinary curtain. There are many window blinds in different styles and materials.
Venetian blinds. This type is categorized as large. The original types were made with wide curved metal slats, similar to a mini slat. The shapes can be curved, flat, or even elliptical.
Faux or PVC. This is classified as mini blinds and the materials are solid or foamed poly vinyl chloride plastic. PVC is a new addition to the materials that are used for window blinds. The slats’ finish is smooth, or embossed with wood surface grain patterns. The most common color is white or white based, although some simulate the color of wood.
The PVC have high UV tolerance, are water-resistant and easy to maintain. The main drawback with faux blinds is the weight of the slats. PVC slats are heavier than both wood and composite slats and when used with large windows, they can make raising the window a difficult task.
Composite blinds. Most composite blinds are made of wood materials and synthetics. Composite is a newer material that’s being used for the window covering. The slats of composites have either smooth poly coating or pure composite material.
Similar to PVC, the color selection is normally limited mostly to whites although there are a few wood tone and stain colors available. The composite blinds are priced in the low to mid range. They have qualities similar to PVC and faux, and are some of the best available.
Wood blinds. These are of course made of wood, and there are two types – the value and premium wood blinds. The so-called value woods are made out of Oriental hardwood while those made out of American hardwood are the premium slats.
If you plan to match a cabinet or trim stain, wood blinds will be your best choice. Wood blinds are among the best, although they are also among the most expensive. Wooden slants will inevitably warp and change color over a period of time. They are also the lightest material available and work really good with large windows.
Aside from its practical uses, the introduction of window blinds has added a new dimension in decorating the home. Window blinds will allow you to control sunlight that comes into the room thus enhancing the environment of your home. Window blinds come in many versions so you have the luxury of choosing the type that best suits your home and your budget.
