Draperies For Decorating Your Bay Windows

With the charm and grace that it provides a room, bay windows is one of the most important window types that is difficult to decorate. Architecturally designed as an overhang window, this window type may be designed with or without a window seat. Having a window seat allows for more space within a room from which guests can sit without the added tables or chairs in the area.

Choosing the correct window treatment for bay windows can prove to be a little bit tricky as compared to regular windows since they come in two types: the polygonal-shaped windows or the normal square windows. Depending on how big your bay window is, you have several design options to pick from. So, use more of your imagination to come up with unique window treatments.

If you have bay windows in your living room and they extend to the floor, then drapes and drapery will give that elegant and fashionable look to your windows. By pulling a cord, you can draw open the drapes to let some light in or to get a view of the outside. As you do this, the folds create a drapes bunching that makes the curtains look great as well.

If you do not have the luxury of full-sized windows, mini blinds can be your other option. The great thing about mini blinds is that they’re extremely affordable and are very easy to keep clean – they just look great for years with minimal maintenance. Other options include custom fitted fabric shades. These shades can add a whole new dimension to the look of your home, and come in an extensive variety of fabrics, patterns and styles.

Another option is to use tab curtains for your windows. With the use of a curtain rod, your curtains can be opened by manually pulling them to the other side.

So, the trick here is to consider the shape of your bay windows before deciding on the type of window treatment to apply. Seek professional help if you think your ideas do not match with your current furnishings. Understanding how bay windows should be treated will ensure a well-thought out design and a functional area as well.

Looking for a classic window covering product that provides for all the basic needs of privacy and light blocking? That’s what many are doing it the current market. During any time of recession and/or depression consumers alter their shopping methods to accommodate the changes in their spending habits. This is definitely happening in the current economical situation. In the window covering industry reaching for the classic that covers all the bases means reaching for aluminum blinds.

Consumers are often just looking for a product that will provide for the basic needs. Most often these basic needs are privacy and light blocking. These individuals often find themselves looking at aluminum blinds.

No one is arguing that aluminum blinds are classic. And this alone makes them a choice, but they are a good choice for other reasons as well. They’ve been around a long time. They offer ease of use and durability and ease of maintenance. This alone makes them advantageous. Some find the additional versatility surprising. They come in a variety of sizes. And they even come up to 95% recycled.

Another advantage is the availability of head rail options. Some head rail options negate the need for an additional valance. They can make it quite easy to pair aluminum blinds with other window covering products like drapes or curtains, etc. The pair can be the perfect accent for interior design schemes.

Some consumers find pinpointing aluminum blinds confusing because not all distributors call them by the same name. They are often referred to as mini blinds. The most common mini blinds or aluminum blinds size is smaller than that of the most common size for other horizontal blinds products. But aluminum blinds are available in a variety of sizes just like other products in the industry. This is something that many consumers find surprising as they assumed the aluminum blinds came in one size only.

While aluminum blinds are an indisputable classic in the industry…they have benefited from change as the industry experienced advances benefiting their products. Updates in any industry will result in some general changes that benefit the classic products. But aluminum blinds still offer that classic look, that classic feel and their classic ability to cover all the bases of providing the necessary privacy and light blocking needs with ease.

Beyond Mini Blinds

Many consumers are under the mistaken impression that the possibilities when it comes to window coverings is a bit limited. They immediately think of one, maybe two products and think those are the only options they have to work with. These consumers haven’t looked around to see what’s offered on the market in a while. Mini blinds are a classic and still popular option, but they are nowhere near the only option. There are a lot of additional options that are available on the market that may suit the needs of shoppers just as well or better.

Mini blinds are a good first option. They do a good job of light blocking and they’re affordable. They provide the privacy that people are looking for when they purchase window coverings. They are typically available for immediate installation. They don’t typically require any sort of wait time for custom design, etc. But they’re just the first option. To ensure they’re the best option consider all the other products, options and features before making a decision.

When consumers move on to consider horizontal wood or faux blinds they find a popular upgrade in the cornice style valance (not available for mini blinds). It adds a bit of elegance to the basic horizontal blind design. Not every horizontal blind product offers the upgrade; it depends upon the manufacturer. But most do offer it and most offer it at no additional cost. The basic, interior mount valance leaves valance clips visible. Since a majority of consumers see the visible valance clips as negative to the overall “look” of the window covering the cornice style valance will continue to be a popular option.

Also popular are the decorative tapes that cover visible cords on horizontal blinds (again…not available for mini blinds). The decorative tapes block light as it attempts to leak through the route holes. So this particular option benefits the consumer in two ways: by increasing the function of the product and by elevating the aesthetic appeal.

Additional features that many consumers find advantageous include: edge binding, 5 inch valances, cassette headrails, routless ladders, etc. The most popular choices when it comes to additional options/features are those that enhance both aesthetics and function.

Again…mini blinds are a great first option. They’re the perfect place to start. And they’re often a great final choice. But making the best final choice means considering all the options starting at the first and moving forward. So never make the mistake of thinking you’ve found the perfect choice without ever considering the competition. Considering all the options makes for a much higher success rate.

Custom Drapery Panels and Rods

Filed Under (Window Blinds) by Chris Stanley on 03-05-2010

It may surprise you to find out how many options there are with custom draperies. From the different designs which can include ring top, grommet drapery panels, French pleat and rod pocket curtains to the different fabrics that can include floral, sheers, stripes, harlequin designs and more, there are a host of options that allow you to make your custom drapes unique.

The rods for drapery can be just as varied as the drapery itself. With options that include wood, metal, art deco, wrought iron and more you’ll be able to combine the perfect rod with the perfect draperies to make the perfect window coverings for your home. But as you look for draperies, look for drapery made in the US to help support our economy.

For greater convenience and to be more visually attractive, the fullness of the drapery is built right into it. To determine the size you need, all you need to do is measure the area you need to have covered. As a rule of thumb, the fullness is about 2 times the size of the panel but this not always the case across the board.

You usually are unable to get the rod included in the drapery package, however, if you upgrade you are usually able to get the liners which normally do not come with the drapery. There are two basic kinds of liners. There are the liners that are designed to keep a room lit by letting in some sunlight while retaining privacy. Then there are the liners that are designed to block out as much of the light as possible. These types of liners are referred to as blackout liners and can actually assist with heating and cooling costs and help in noise reduction.

The design of drapery panels allows the drapery rods to fit perfectly. Depending on what your preferences are you can choose from many different finishes and styles of rods. Some drapery has additional fabric that creates a continuous and flowing look; this can be complimented by the right rod. Other drapery options make use of rings that can be pinned or sewed onto the drapery. The rod pocket drapery is designed to have the rod inserted through the top of it, therefore rings are not needed.

Ring tops panels are a style of drapery that many are drawn to. There are two types of ring top panels to choose from; the first features clip on drapery rings. Each ring is attached to the top part of the curtain with a clip. The second type of ring top panel features rings that are sewn into the panel. Each panel comes with as many rings as will be required.

French pleat drapery panels provide a fun and classy look for a home. These panels are pinched at the top to create the pleat. Each of the panels are connected to the rod using a drapery clip that is attached using a pin on the back side of the drapery panel. Many people are also drawn to grommet drapery panels. These panels include metal grommets at the top of the to drapery panel to secure the panels to the rod.

Many businesses that once were exclusively window blind suppliers are now expanding their line into the drapery business. Many customers will find that this creates a one-stop shopping experience. With the addition of custom drapery, many large windows can be instantly transformed into something of noteworthy beauty.

Why Designer Solar Window Shades Are A Summer Favorite

Filed Under (Window Blinds) by Chris Stanley on 02-05-2010

Whether it be the windows in their living rooms, bedrooms or workspaces, people want to be able to look out of the windows and enjoy the view while still being able to adjust the amount of glare and the amount of heat that enters an area, thus solar window shades were created. And now, a recent introduction to the market is turning heads; Designer Solar Window Shades, the shades that offer a little spice to a room!

The choice is yours! To attend to the needs of a variety of customers, designer solar shades come in many different fabrics, weaves, patterns and colors. The most common of these is the solar shade that contains a 5% openness factor that preserves the view while filtering out natural light. With summer on the way, these designer shades are sure to be flying out the doors.

There are many different options to choose from when it comes to selecting the right solar shade for your windows. Manufactures are quite successful in providing a world of options to meet everyone’s needs. Solar shades come in all weaves and sizes as well as with different levels of quality. You can even choose to join many manufacturers and go green with solar shades that are GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certified for low emissions (LEED). This certification is only awarded if three areas are properly met; air quality, environmental materials and energy savings.

Depending on the specific company shipping the blinds, turnaround time can vary to some degree. However, many sizes and colors are kept in-house and will be available within a 2-day production time.

When you are shopping for designer solar window shades, make sure you shop around to ensure you are saving as much as possible. With spring here and summer right around the corner companies are offering big discounts on their designer shades and window coverings. Savings up to 30% off are offered by specific companies.

Because solar shades reduce the amount of heat that enters a room, these shades are great for keeping the potentially damaging heat and light from harming furniture, pictures, artwork and more. Additionally, they reduce air conditioning costs by blocking heat without blocking the view.

“While glass tends to heat up the sun’s rays as they enter your home, these transparent shades continually block and reflect this thermal energy before it has a chance to come into the room. But the real beauty is that just like sunglasses or car tints, you are still able to look out and enjoy the view from your house. This makes these shades ideal for any weather climate in any geographical landscape, city, or countryside,” reports servicemagic.com

As anyone who has fully seen the benefits of solar shades will say, solar shades are a must have for warm weather areas. They are affordable and their benefits can be found today, tomorrow and for years to come. They reduce heat, they reduce glare, they can make an otherwise uncomfortable room enjoyable and pleasant to spend the day in.
